♻️ German Waste-to-Energy Crisis: Overcapacity Forces Plants to Halt Waste Deliveries ♻️

The German waste-to-energy (WTE) market is facing a severe overload this summer, with many facilities reaching full capacity and even halting new waste deliveries. The market has been thrown into disarray due to a combination of factors, including the partial shutdown of the AVR Rozenburg plant in the Netherlands after a 2023 fire, which has redirected significant waste flows into Germany. As a result, waste is piling up at recycling firms, and the spot market for non-hazardous waste has essentially stalled, creating uncertainty and logistical challenges across the industry.

Plant downtimes lead to excess supply on German waste incineration market

There is such a glut of waste on the German energy recovery market this summer that some incineration facilities have even stopped accepting deliveries. "At the moment, nobody really knows anymore where to send commercial waste," one market participant told EUWID in July.
