BMW and Redwood Launch US Recycling Collaboration for Lithium-Ion Batteries

BMW of North America has partnered with Redwood Materials to collect and recycle lithium-ion batteries in the United States. The collaboration aims to achieve a recycling rate of 95 to 98 percent for essential materials like nickel, cobalt, and lithium, which will be returned to the battery production process.

This initiative will utilize BMW's network of approximately 700 locations across the U.S. Redwood's innovative recycling process claims to consume 80 percent less energy and water compared to conventional methods and produces 70 percent fewer carbon emissions.

In a strategic move, Redwood is building a new facility in South Carolina, close to BMW's Spartanburg plant, to minimize transportation costs and accelerate the integration of recycled materials into the production of electric vehicles. BMW plans to manufacture several all-electric models and the necessary high-voltage batteries at these sites in the coming years, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and innovation in the automotive industry.
