LYB Begins Construction of Advanced Recycling Plant in Wesseling, Germany
LyondellBasell has commenced construction on its first industrial-scale advanced recycling plant at its Wesseling site, set to begin operations in 2026. This facility aims to support Germany's circular economy and low carbon goals by utilizing LYB's proprietary MoReTec technology to recycle mixed plastic waste into raw materials for new plastic polymers.
The project has received a €40 million grant from the EU Innovation Fund, underscoring its significance for the region and Germany's broader environmental objectives. Notable figures, including German Chancellor Scholz and Minister-President Wüst, attended the foundation-laying ceremony.
LYB anticipates that the MoReTec technology will transition the use of traditional fossil-based raw materials toward circular resources. This catalytic process is expected to conserve energy and significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions, serving as a model for future investments in sustainable technologies.
