⚡ RWE Maintains Dominance in German Electricity Market 🇩🇪📊

Energy giant RWE has been confirmed as the dominant player in Germany’s electricity market for the fifth time in a row, according to a report by the Federal Cartel Office. While periods of reliance on RWE's power plants had decreased, rising demand from electric vehicles, heat pumps, and a potential economic rebound are expected to restore its critical role in the market.

The report highlights RWE's pivotal role during periods of Dunkelflaute—times when wind and solar power generation is extremely low. A stark example was the 6 November 2024 price spike, caused by insufficient renewable supply. RWE’s ability to predict these high-demand periods raises concerns about potential price-setting power, though no direct legal actions have been initiated.

Electricity imports have risen, providing some relief to domestic supply constraints. However, RWE CEO Markus Krebber warned that without swift decisions on building new power plants, Germany risks instability during severe shortages as older fossil fuel plants are phased out. He urged the construction of gas-fired and hydrogen-ready plants to secure the energy transition.
