☀️ USDA Announces $1.4B Solar & Battery Energy Project in Texas

The USDA has unveiled a $1.4 billion initiative to transition the San Miguel Electric Cooperative in Christine, Texas, to a 600-megawatt solar and battery energy system by 2027.

This clean energy project, part of the Empowering Rural America (New ERA) Program, aims to:

  • Reduce Climate Pollution: Cut 1.8 million tons annually, equal to removing 446,000 cars from the road.
  • Boost the Economy: Create up to 600 jobs and lower electricity costs for rural businesses and families.
  • Enhance Energy Security: Power 47 South Texas counties with sustainable energy.

Funded by the Inflation Reduction Act, this marks the largest rural electrification effort since the 1936 Rural Electrification Act.

USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack celebrated the program's role in improving the environment, energy access, and economic resilience in rural America.
