Germany’s Hydrogen Vision: Pioneering a Diversified Supply Chain

Germany is taking bold steps towards a sustainable future with its new draft hydrogen import strategy!

The plan, set to be agreed upon on July 24th, aims for a diversified import structure for green hydrogen, leveraging pipelines from countries like Denmark, Norway, the UK, and eventually northern Africa.

Key Highlights:

Green & Low-Carbon Hydrogen: Emphasis on green hydrogen from renewables, but also allowing low-carbon hydrogen, including natural gas-derived hydrogen with CO2 capture.

State Support Programs: Utilizing H2Global, IPCEI, and climate contracts to build a robust supply system.

Sustainability & Social Standards: Ensuring imported hydrogen meets social, environmental, and local value creation standards.

International Certification: Advocating for global standards to ensure compliance.

This strategy is a significant move towards decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors like steelmaking and the chemical industry. Recently, Germany awarded its first contract for green ammonia from Egypt, marking a milestone in this journey.

Debate Heats Up Over Germany's Capacity Market for Power Plants

Germany's plan for a capacity market, rewarding power plants for providing capacity rather than electricity, is under fire. Critics argue it doesn't suit a renewable-based system.

Here's the scoop:

Industry Concerns: The German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK), energy market association (bne), and European Energy Exchange (EEX) argue that capacity markets create bad incentives and need constant political meddling. They suggest market-based mechanisms for a more efficient and cost-effective supply.

Government Strategy: As part of the Power Plant Safety Act, Germany aims to secure backup capacity with "hydrogen-ready" gas plants. These would initially run on natural gas, switching to renewable hydrogen later.

Proposed Solutions: The group recommends a hedging obligation, making suppliers back their commitments on the futures market. This approach, part of EU regulations, could prevent defaults seen during energy crises and promote competition and innovation.

Tender Plans: The government plans to tender 10 GW of new H2-ready gas plants and modernize 2.5 GW of existing capacity by 2030. Approval from the European Commission is pending.

Industry Reaction: LEAG CEO Thorsten Kramer calls the government's auction proposal two years late, complicating the energy transition. Rising construction costs and unclear hydrogen sourcing add to the uncertainty. Kramer doubts the planned tenders will close the supply gap, estimated to be 20-30 GW by 2030, questioning the feasibility of a 2035 coal exit.

Stay tuned to our Xpylon as Germany navigates its path to a renewable future! 🌍🚀

Tenders for hydrogen-ready gas-fired power plants by late 2024 or early 2025

Germany is taking a big step towards a greener future with its Power Plant Strategy!

The government will launch the first tenders for hydrogen-ready gas-fired power plants by late 2024 or early 2025. Here's what's planned:

--> 5 GW of new H2-ready plants + Additional 5 GW of gas-fired plants to ensure power supply during low wind and sun periods

--> 2 GW of H2-ready modernizations

--> 500 MW of pure hydrogen plants

--> 500 MW of storage

The costs of this massive Project will be subsidized to ensure smooth transition to green or blue hydrogen.

Stay tuned to not miss out on the launching of the tenders! 🌍🚀
